Expats participating in the Economy

I stumbled across this article today which states that South African wine is outselling French wine for the first time in Britain.

It made me think of how many South African products I have introduced to non South Africans. Things that jump to mind is Ina Paarman products, Nando's sauces, wine and yes even biltong and droëwors.

Come to think of it, us expats can be pretty good ambassadors for South Africa and although we don't pay tax in our homeland, we certainly do support the economy. We buy South African products and introduce these products to our mates. Some of us send money home or buy property in South Africa. We go visit SA and contribute to the tourism market. We are very important contributors of foreign capital flowing into SA.

It is actually a shame that there is a certain part of the South African population that holds such a negative sentiment towards South African Expats. The "traitor" remarks etc comes to mind. Anyway, that is a blog for another day and a very hot topic.

I think in our country, as isolated from the world as it was in the 80s, there are many people that would think you're being a traitor when you move overseas. But my dad was a contract worker from UK when he met my mum in Joburg and she had only moved to SA from Paris when she was ten.

One little country was never going to be enough for me and I am not sure I will stay in the UK forever either. I didn't "catch" the travel bug, it is in my genes.

Having said that, a Zimbabwean lady and I had a joyful meeting on a London platform when I spotted her drinking Sparberry and demanded to know where she'd found it.

Lol! Yeah, we live in a global community now. Nationalism can be a dangerous thing if taken too far.

A few of my Aussie mates here in Perth love boerewors. Once they tasted it, they didn't want to eat these silly local "sizzler" sausuages anymore.

And those who have the courage to try biltong also love it!

Boerewors has been known to be popular especially among the ladies.

Wow! SA wines outselling French Wines in mud island? That's quite an achievement if one considers how long a history there is in Britain of importing Bordeaux wines.

I agree. Maybe it is the millions of Saffas in the UK drinking up all the SA wine. Lol!

I teach and came upon a 15 year old ozzie boy, who really looks like he could use a haircut and a good shower. When he heard I was from SA, het got very exited. His cousin has 'n finacee from SA, and the fiancee gave them biltong and they love it. Now he cannot wait to eat this guys "potjiekos". He wants to visit SA because he thinks the food are great. (And according to his looks he just loves food! ;)

I couldn't agree with you more - I think the best ambassadors for South Africa are often the ones that leave, and I certainly keep my little SA shop in business when it comes to biltong and creamsoda :0)

Great blog - just my sentiments. Glad that these days my local shops in the German bundu stocks rooibos tea, SA wine and even Mrs Balls Chutney. And boy have I introduced these products to all my new mates. Last year I even did a reading with only SA wines and snacks (which went down very well and were even more popular than my book) Yes we ARE good ambassadors and our compatriots back home should appreciate that too.

The problem is wine is HUGELY expensive in UK. On top of paying for the name, you get massive taxes. No jokes, a cheap bottle of wine is £4,00 which nobody will really drink. Try £17 for a decent, average name. So if you want to have a dinner for six, put £100 aside just for booze, never mind a decent rip roaring party!
